US swine flu cases jump to 68

The number of confirmed swine flu cases in the United States has jumped to 64, federal officials said Tuesday, and states reported at least 4 more.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention informed the new count includes “a number of hospitalizations.” CDC officials had previously said just one person had been hospitalized.

The CDC said there were about 17 new cases in New York City, four more in Texas and three additional cases in California. That brings the total numbers of cases confirmed by federal officials to 45 in New York City, 10 in California, six in Texas, two in Kansas and one in Ohio.

State health officials in California have confirmed three other cases, and Indiana authorities have confirmed one.

The increase is not surprising. For days, CDC officials have said they expected to see more confirmed cases — and more severe illnesses. Health officials across the country have stepped up efforts to look for cases, especially among people with flu-like illness who had traveled to Mexico.

CDC officials also warned that updates in the number of confirmed cases would at time be disjointed, as different states announce new information before the CDC’s national count is updated.

First Case of Swine Flu detected in Orlando

WFTV-Channel 9 reported in its noon news today that Orlando might have its first case of swine flu. It was an alarming report, because the information couldn’t be confirmed.

WFTV’s Web site was more definite: “Swine Flu Case Confirmed in Orlando.” A WFTV story on the Web reads: “Eyewitness News has learned of Orlando’s first confirmed case of swine flu, however Florida Hospital is denying the claim.”

But Dr. Scott Brady of Florida Hospital said, in a news conference at 12:30, there were no confirmed cases of swine flu here. WFTV, WKMG-Channel 6 and Central Florida News 13 carried the news conference.

Earlier today, WFTV-9 in Orlando reported that Loran Hauck, Adventist Health System’s chief medical officer, wrote that a patient at the hospital had been diagnosed with swine flu. WFTV-9′s report said Hauck’s e-mail originally stated that the patient was a tourist from Mexico who visited Disney attractions over the weekend.

State Health Department spokeswoman Susan Smith later said the state has not yet confirmed the case as swine flu.

”Confirmation of positive tests of swine flu will come from Department of Health labs and the Centers for Disease Control,” she said in a statement.

Brady said the hospital would have to wait 24 to 48 hours for confirmation from state officials. Brady said the infected patient was diagnosed with Influenza A, a category of the flu, which includes swine flu. But, this could be one of several other types of flu.

Orange County Health Department officials told the Orlando Sentinel that they are aware of at least one case being tested.

”We have released one suspect case that was sent to a state lab for testing and we’re waiting to see what that is,” Orange County Health Department spokesman Dain Weister told the newspaper. “There may be more than one [case]. Any influenza-like cases are being sent and being looked at.”

Weister said they have not received any confirmation from CDC about swine flu in Central Florida.

“A Florida Hospital administrator says the case was diagnosed in the past day or so,” WFTV anchor Vanessa Echols said.

The station said it was trying to track down more details, but the Orange County Health Department said there were no confirmed cases in Orange County, anchor West said.

Disney had no information, Belich said. Stay tuned for more information.
